Hull Blitz Walk

On 23rd April 2025, members of the Hornsea & District u3a went on a guided walking tour of the centre of Hull to discover some of the hidden history of Hull during the Blitz.  Paul Schofield - local historian and guide - provided the insights and we discovered that Hull was the most bombed city outside of London during the war, with 90% of housing stock damaged or destroyed, meaning that throughout the war, about half the population was homeless. The bombing was not only targeted Hull as a major port and industrial area, but also it was the recipient of any unused bombs the Luftwaffe needed to drop after visiting other cities in the North before heading back across the North Sea.  The devastation remains relatively unknown, due to broadcasting restrictions during the war describing the attacks as on a town in the North East.
