Visit to St Michael and All Angels Church, Garton-in-the-Wolds

On Thursday 26th June , a group of us from the local History went to visit St Michael and All Angels church in Garton on the Wolds.

It is a Norman church, of medieval origins and from the exterior it did not seem to be particularly special. BUT.. when we entered, that was  when the magic began : the church walls are covered with exquisite Pre-Raphaelite style paintings which describe stories from the Bible, with the Creation and Old Testament themes in the nave, to the Last Judgement and the New Testament in the chancel. In the chancel, the marble sculptures were awe inspiring. And let’s not forget the ceilings which were also lavishly decorated. The Reverend Jane Anderson was kind enough to relate the history of the church and the paintings and even provided us with tea or coffee, for as she told us “ you wouldn’t go to someone’s house and not expect some refreshment..”

We finished the visit outside , with a viewing of a couple of medieval graves which were also astonishing.

A church well worth a second (and even third) visit.

What a great day that was.
